• Joint physical custody is increasing and is particularly common in Sweden.
• Separated Swedish parents of toddlers find equally shared parenting to be natural.
• Parents emphasize that joint physical custody is in the best interest of the child.
• Ambivalent parents also believed that equal sharing is the eventual goal.
• Both fathers and mothers describe involved fatherhood as the ideal after separation.
